Unintended air bag deployment plagues 167,749 newly recalled Jeep Cherokees

By Pamela C. Maloney, J.D.

Chrysler announced the recall of 167,749 model year 2014-2015 Jeep Cherokees manufactured from January 1, 2013, to November 19, 2014 because the affected vehicles may experience unintended side curtain and seat air bag deployment during vehicle operation. Chrysler warned that if the air bags deploy unexpectedly during vehicle operation, it can increase the risk of personal injury and increase the risk of a crash (NHTSA Recall Notice, No. 15V041, February 5, 2015).

In its January 28 defect notification to NHTSA, Chrysler stated that it will notify owners, and dealers will re-flash the occupant restraint control module software, free of charge. The company expects the recall to begin on March 26, 2015.

Contact information. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is R05. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
