Toyota recalls 2 million vehicles with defective power window master switches

By Pamela C. Maloney, J.D.

Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., is conducting a safety recall of approximately 2,000,000 vehicles in the United States to correct a problem related to the driver’s side power window master switch. According to a company press release the power window master switch may have been manufactured with insufficient lubricant grease. If not enough grease is applied, under certain conditions the switch may develop a short circuit that can cause the switch assembly to overheat and melt, the company reported. A melting switch can produce smoke and potentially lead to a fire. Toyota previously recalled certain 2007-2009 model year vehicles for a similar condition. This Safety Recall adds vehicles not previously involved in the prior action that utilized an alternative lubricant application method (Toyota Press Release, October 20, 2015).

According to press reports, the recall affects an estimated total of 2.7 million vehicles in North America, 1.2 million in Europe, and 600,000 in Japan. The vehicle models/years affected by the recall include: 2007 and 2009 Camry and Camry Hybrid; 2009-2011 Corolla; 2008-2011 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid; 2009-2011 Matrix; 2006-2011 RAV4; 2009-2011 Sequoia; 2009-2011 Tundra; 2006-2010 Yaris; 2009-2011 Scion xB; and 2009-2010 Scion xD.

Remedy. Owners of the involved vehicles will be notified by first-class mail. Toyota dealers will inspect the switch and apply heat-resistant grease. If the switch is not operating normally, an internal circuit board will be replaced.

Contact information. Owners may contact Toyota Customer Service at 1-800-331-4331 for more information. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to
