Toyota expands Takada airbag recall; 637,000 additional vehicles affected

By John Dumoulin

Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., has recalled approximately 160,000 model year 2004 and 2005 RAV4 sport utility vehicles because they are equipped with Takata air bag inflators that could be susceptible to rupture when deployed in a crash, increasing the risk of injury to vehicle occupants. In addition, Toyota announced that it is expanding two previous recalls for the same defect, bringing the total number of vehicles affected by the expanded recalls to 637,000 (Toyota Press Release, May 13, 2015).

Prior recalls. Toyota has expanded its April 2013 recall to include an estimated 177,000 additional model year 2003-2004 Tundra and model year 2004 Sequoia vehicles (NHTSA Recall Notice, 13V13300, April 11, 2013 [see Products Liability Law Daily’s April 16, 2013 analysis]). Toyota also expanded its 2014 recall aimed at areas of high absolute humidity to include approximately 300,000 additional vehicles built through the 2006 or 2007 model year. This recall will now cover additional vehicles within model years 2005-2007 Toyota Corolla, Corolla Matrix, and Sequoia; model years 2005-2006 Tundra; and model years 2005-2007 Lexus SC. Areas of high absolute humidity encompass coastal areas around the Gulf of Mexico for Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia and Louisiana; and Florida, Puerto Rico, Guam, Saipan, American Samoa, the Virgin Islands, and Hawaii (NHTSA Recall Notice, No. 14V655, October 27, 2014 [see Products Liability Law Daily’s October 27, 2014 analysis]).

Remedy. All known owners of the affected Toyota / Lexus vehicles will be notified by first class mail to return their vehicles to a Toyota / Lexus dealer. The dealer will replace the airbag inflator with a newly manufactured one.

Related Nissan recall. Nissan also announced that it is conducting an urgent recall campaign on Model Year 2003-2004 Nissan Pathfinder and Model Year 2004-2006 Nissan Sentra vehicles. Owners of the affected vehicles who live in one of the affected areas are urged to contact the nearest Nissan dealership immediately to arrange for repairs. Owners can enter their vehicle VIN on Nissan’s website at http://www.nissanusa.com/recalls-vin#/ for more information.

Contact information. Owners may contact the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331 or online at www.toyota.com/recall, or the Lexus Customer Satisfaction Center at 1-800-255-3987 or online at www.lexus.com/recall.
