Toyota changes remedy for 2013 recall of RAV4, Lexus vehicles

Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. announced that it is changing the remedy for its recall of approximately 337,000 model year 2006-2011 Toyota RAV4 and model year 2010 Lexus HS 250h vehicles (Toyota Press Release, August 12, 2016). The affected vehicles originally were recalled (NHTSA Recall Notice, No. 13V383) because if the nuts for adjusting the rear wheel alignment were improperly tightened during service, the rear suspension arm (rear tire rod) could develop unwanted movement and rust, leading to thread damage and eventual failure. The company warned that failure of the rear tire rod would cause an abrupt change in the vehicle’s alignment, resulting in the loss of vehicle control.

Pursuant to the new remedy, all known owners of the involved vehicles will be notified by first class mail, and dealers will replace both rear suspension arm assemblies with new ones at no cost to customers. In addition, an epoxy will be applied to prevent future arm adjustment during vehicle service.

Toyota’s original remedy involved an inspection of the tie rods by a dealer and replacement of any that had rust or corrosion on the alignment adjustment threads. All of the rear tie rods would then be encased in an epoxy to prevent future environmental damage. The recall superseded Toyota and Lexus recall 12V373, and all vehicles that were inspected and remedied under the previous recall were required to be re-inspected and have the appropriate remedy applied.
