Toyota and Lexus recall 320,000 vehicles to replace airbag control modules

By John Dumoulin

Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., has recalled approximately 320,000 model year 2003-2006 Land Cruiser; 2004-2006 4Runner; 2005-2006 Tundra and Sequoia; 2003-2006 LX 470; and 2004-2006 GX 470 vehicles due to problems with the airbag control modules, according to a company news release. The affected vehicles are equipped with side Curtain-Shield-Airbags (CSAs) that deploy from the roof in the event of certain types of crashes. Toyota reported that due to improper programming in the airbag control modules, it is possible that, under certain specific and limited conditions shortly after startup, the CSAs and seat belt pretensioners could activate when not necessary. According to the company, unexpected activation of the CSAs could increase the risk of injury to the occupant (Toyota News Release, February 2, 2016).

Remedy. Toyota’s release stated that all known owners of the affected vehicles will be notified by first class mail and that Toyota and Lexus dealers will replace the airbag control module with one that has an improved programming at no cost to owners.

Contact information. Toyota said owners can check a vehicle’s status by going to http://www.toyota.com/recall and entering the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). The company said customers can also call Toyota Customer Service at 1-800-331-4331 or Lexus Customer Service at 1-800-255-3987. In addition, owners may contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
