Rosekind confirmed as NHTSA head

By Joe Bichl

The full Senate confirmed Mark R. Rosekind on December 16 to be Administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, filling a year-long vacancy at the agency. During consideration of Rosekind’s nomination, the Senate voted 53 to 40 (Vote No. 361), to close further debate on the nomination.

Rosekind will take over as administrator of NHTSA after spending four years as a member of the National Transportation Safety Board. He was nominated for his new post by President Obama on Nov. 19, and the Senate confirmed his appointment on Dec. 16.

Rosekind has said he is committed to maintaining an aggressive focus on continuing to improve NHTSA’s safety record and ensuring that the agency’s “regulatory regime is current for today’s safety environment.” Rosekind also indicated that he would look to every legal tool available to enforce the laws and regulations. “NHTSA needs to be the enforcer,” Rosekind said, and the agency must be ready to act and use those tools.

As an NTSB Board Member, Rosekind pursued accident investigations, issued safety recommendations and undertook advocacy efforts to make the U.S. transportation system safer. He also worked at NASA, where he expanded his field of knowledge into varied human factors arenas and translated that knowledge into effective solutions that addressed operation problems in safety-critical environments.
