Risk of scrubbing-related tread separation prompts recall of 35,000+ Bridgestone trailer tires

By Pamela C. Maloney, J.D.

Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations, LLC (BATO) recalled 35,907 FS561 replacement tires, size 255/70R22.5, manufactured from January 25, 2015, to January 27, 2016 (DOT weeks 0515-0416) and designed for use on trailers because these tires could experience possible tread separation or detachment as a result of scrubbing during use. Tread separation or detachment may result in a sudden loss of air pressure, increasing the risk of a crash BATO reported that these tires did not exhibit an increased risk for this condition in any other application. The company also noted that it was not aware of any injuries related to this condition and stated that the tires fully comply with FMVSS No. 119 (NHTSA Recall Notice, No. 16T020, Report receipt date: February 1, 2016).

Remedy. BATO will replace the subject tires with the Firestone FS560 PLUS or other comparable Bridgestone brand or Firestone brand tires for free or provide customers with a full refund. BATO has not yet provided a notification schedule.
