Moisture in power liftgate poses risk of fire in 164,000 Jeep Cherokees

By Pamela C. Maloney, J.D.

FCA US LLC announced a recall affecting an estimated 164,003 model year 2014-2015 Jeep Cherokee SUVs because the power liftgate control modules in these SUVs could be inadvertently exposed to water. The company warned that exposure to moisture could cause a short-circuit, creating a fire hazard. FCA noted that it was unaware of any injuries or accidents related to this hazard. The recall, which affects 99,426 vehicles in the United States, 13,195 vehicles in Canada, 2,406 vehicles in Mexico, and another 48,966 vehicles outside of the NAFTA region, is limited to vehicles equipped with power liftgates (FCA US LLC Press Release, June 24, 2015).

Remedy. FCA advised that all affected customers will be advised when they may schedule service. If the modules show signs of water exposure, they will be replaced. The company also plans to install shields that will protect the power liftgate control modules from moisture, All recall-related work will be performed free of charge. Vehicle owners were advised that in the interim, the cargo areas of Jeep Cherokees equipped with power liftgates should be monitored and kept dry.
