BMW expands earlier recall of diesel vehicles

By Colleen Kave, J.D.

BMW has increased from the original estimate of 480,000 to 1.6 million the number of vehicles covered by a previous recall campaign that began in August 2018 to address a coolant fluid leakage problem. In a press release yesterday, the automaker disclosed that in some of its diesel vehicles, glycol leakage from the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler can combine with soot deposits and high temperatures, causing smoldering particles and leading to a fire. BMW initially recalled vehicles in Europe and Asia to address this defect, but after further examination of vehicles with similar engines, the company decided to expand its recall worldwide. The affected vehicles were produced between August 2010 and August 2017 (BMW Press Release, October 23, 2018).

BMW will contact affected customers and is offering to check the EGR module, replacing any faulty components on the potentially affected diesel vehicles.
