Senate confirms Dr. Vivek Murthy as ‘America’s Doctor’

Dr. Vivek Murthy has been confirmed by the Senate as the country’s next Surgeon General. In the words of President Obama, “as ‘America’s Doctor,’ Vivek will hit the ground running to make sure every American has the information they need to keep themselves and their families safe.” As Surgeon General, Vivek’s duty will be to protect, promote, and advance the public health of Americans. Dr. Murthy officially became Surgeon General upon Senate confirmation after he was nominated by the President on November 18, 2013. The Surgeon General serves for a term of four years.

Surgeon General. According to a White House blog post, the Surgeon General oversees 6,700 members of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, and chairs the National Prevention Council, which is a collection of 20 federal departments and agencies that focus on prevention and wellness for American individuals, families, and communities. Dr. Murthy expressed an intention to focus his term on specific public health issues, including “obesity, mental health, smoking, and health care delivery.”

Dr. Murthy. The new Surgeon General, who is the first Indian-American to hold the position, has spent his career focused on public health in the U.S. and worldwide. According to the White House, as the co-founder and president of Doctors of America, Dr. Murthy has worked to improve American’s access to health care. Additionally, by cofounding VISIONS Worldwide, Dr. Murthy has made efforts to improve HIV and AIDS education in India and the United States. Dr. Murthy is replacing Rear Admiral Boris D. Lushniak who has been serving as Acting Surgeon General since Dr. Regina Benjamin finished her term in 2013.
